Strategic partnership prevents screening backlog with rapid deployment of high-specification temporary mobile healthcare unit
Taunton, United Kingdom, 3rd February 2026 – The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust has announced a critical upgrade to its West Berkshire Breast Screening Programme, ensuring that life-saving screenings continue without interruption following the retirement of a long-serving mobile scanning vehicle.
After years of service to the local community, one of the Trust’s primary mobile screening units has reached its end-of-life and has been officially retired. To prevent any lapse in care for the thousands of women eligible for screening in the region, the specialist connectivity and mobile healthcare team at DEOS Consulting has successfully transitioned the service onto a new temporary vehicle.
This rapid deployment ensures that the screening schedule remains on track while the Trust awaits the arrival of a permanent, state-of-the-art replacement vehicle later this year.
Mobile screening units are a cornerstone of the NHS’s strategy to detect breast cancer early, often before symptoms appear. By bringing advanced mammography equipment directly into local communities, the service removes significant barriers to healthcare, such as travel time and cost, which can often deter patients from attending appointments.
The transition to the temporary DEOS-supported vehicle offers several key benefits:
· For the Hospital: The seamless handover prevents a backlog of appointments, maintaining the Trust’s rigorous screening targets and ensuring that clinical staff can continue their work in a high-specification environment.
· For the Patient: Local residents can continue to access screening at convenient, familiar locations rather than traveling to a central hospital site. Early detection remains the most effective tool in improving survival rates, and this continuity ensures no woman misses her vital three-year check.
The temporary unit is equipped with DEOS’s industry-leading digital transfer technology. This allows mammographers to send high-resolution images back to the hospital’s PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) in near real-time via secure 4G/5G and satellite links. This eliminates the need for physical hard drives to be transported, significantly speeding up the time it takes for a clinician to review the images and for a patient to receive their results.
Viv Barrett, Director at DEOS, added: "We understand how vital these mobile units are to the community. Our team worked quickly to ensure the transition to the temporary vehicle was seamless, providing the secure, high-speed connectivity required to maintain the highest standards of diagnostic care."
The West Berkshire Breast Screening Programme currently screens approximately 78,000 women every three years. Residents are encouraged to attend their appointments as usual when invited.
